"A Monday in August"
Cherokee County Volleyball 8.10.26.
Monday was a quiet Summer day at Cherokee County High School. There were a few activities going on over at the football field, but the classrooms were empty and the campus had a soothing calm about it.
The Cherokee County Lady Warriors Volleyball team was back in the gym to begin preparations for their new season. It was the first time I had attended one of their practices and I wasn't sure what to expect from my time with the defending State Champions.
Once inside, I noticed that the atmosphere on the inside was the same as the outside - it was calm. The players were focused on their drills and the coach instructed the players on the tasks at hand. There was no yelling or screaming, there was only calm, focused direction and instruction.
The roar of the home crowd, the over-the-top volleyball celebrations, and the pounding of the school war drum would come soon enough. But Monday wasn't that. Monday was a day of calm. It was a day to reset and to refocus the team as they turned their attention to the coming season.
How far the Lady Warriors will go this season remains to be seen, but one thing's for sure. They got off to a good start on that Monday in August.
